Description | She thanks Herschel for the gift of English hexameters ['The Iliad'], sent via Reginald. She cannot read the original and her copy has been a pleasure to others, including her grandfather. His praise is worth having, and he is admirer of [Alexander] Pope, but thought Herschel's work gave more of an idea of the Greek, being so spirited. She does not admire Pope as much as she should and hopes that Herschel will complete the remainder in time. She has only been there two days, and once to the great Exhibition, where she looked through the gallery of pictures, many of which might have been omitted. There were interesting Gainsboroughs, and she walked through the shops. It is 'a fearful giant of a show'. She hopes to see Herschel but believes he hates London as much as she does. She is glad he has seen Reginald, as he wished when she was last at Collingwood. She notes other members of the Herschel family and send regards. |
