Title | Letter from G [George Murray] Smith, 45 Pall Mall, London, to Sir John F W [Frederick William] Herschel |
Creator | Smith; George Murray (1824-1901); British publisher, businessman, and founder of the Dictionary of National Biography |
Date | 12 March 1862 |
Description | He was grateful for the contents of Herschel's letter of 10 March. The content would be different from anything that has appeared in the [Cornhill] Magazine, but he feels sure it would be acceptable to educated readers, and Herschel's name would encourage those reading for amusement to peruse the translation [of 'The Iliad', Book 1]. He asks for a few prefatory lines respecting the controversy between [Matthew] Arnold and [Francis William] Newman. With half a million readers, there will be many who know nothing of the discussion. If Herschel could send the manuscript he will put it in type before sending to the editor, so that it may be more easily read. |
