Title | Draft letter from J F W [John Frederick William] Herschel, Collingwood, to George Smith, 45 Pall Mall, London |
Creator | Herschel; Sir; John Frederick William (1792 - 1871); astronomer and mathematician |
Date | 13 March 1862 |
Description | He has sent the manuscript of Book 1 of Homer ['The Iliad'] by book post. The notes he would prefer to have printed at the bottom of the pages, if the editor would not prefer them standing at the end. He gives instructions for printing underlined words for emphasis, and in different types. He will prepare a prefatory introduction as suggested, which he was thinking of doing to vindicate the style and course adopted. He asks if the proofs could be sent to him before being sent to the editor, in triplicate: one for spoil, one for corrections, and one to be retained. He mentions that in the event of publication in the magazine, he would reserve the right to republish in the future.
With a small sketch of apparatus, lower right. The draft has been made on the reverse of an advertisement for a translated work by Charles Murchison. |
