TitleLetter from J C [James Calder] Stewart, 3 Delamere to [Sir John Frederick William] Herschel
CreatorStewart; James Calder (1806-1869); British
Date22 August 1867
DescriptionHe received Herschel's note that morning and has gummed the corrections on the back of the title-page. His Latin translation has sent Stewart back to his long-ago studies, with the help of the English translation, the first twenty lines of which haunt him, and he compliments them on the flow and arrangement of vowel sounds. This is one of the accessories of [John] Milton's blank verse. He takes Herschel's note as a permission to retain the first autograph draft of his letter to Stewart, instead of only a copy as Margaret [Herschel] suggested. He forwards a 'classical gem' by a future Senior Wrangler. He came home last night from Ramsgate restored to health. With a postscript 'squib' on the polka.
