William met a Mrs Beynon at Lady Lawrence's who recollected meeting William at General Lawrence's camp at Agra. Mrs Beynon is the daughter of General George Lawrence, who is in England again and William will try to see him. He describes a visit to Sir James South, who gave Emma a lock of hair to set in a ring. There was an outburst about [George Biddell] Airy and [Edward] Sabine, which William brought to an end, as he was seeing Airy afterwards: 'he took it very kindly after a little wincing and fidgetting...it got him off those quarrelsome stories onto pleasanter reminiscences'. William notes other visits, including meeting Sir George Everest, and asking him 'whether it was true that they had overtopped him in the Himalayas'. He asked William to call on him. He notes their busy social life, including seeing 'Hamlet' again and taking riding lessons. They have not been photographed yet. William has accepted McNiele's offer to come to Collingwood and he discusses room arrangements. |
