Title | Letter from William James Herschel, S.S. Salsette, near Bombay [Mumbai], and Anne Emma Herschel, Bombay, to 'Dearest Bella' [Isabella Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge |
Herschel; Anne Emma (née Hardcastle) (1836-1873); British |
Date | 11-16 January 1869 |
Description | They expect to land that afternoon. William complains about the incessant noise of a screw steamer, very unlike a sailing ship. Their cabin was too far aft, he believes, since the decks forward were even and steady. They discovered a cabin closer amidships and combined the two sensations. The voyages through the Mediterranean and Red Sea had perfect weather, the more recent leg less so. [From 16 January] Emma Herschel completes the letter, since William has gone out and may not be back in time to finish it. They arrived safely on 11 January and have spent a pleasant week apart from one visit of William's. Mr and Mrs Chapman have been kind and hospitable. They do not expect to be in Alahabad until 23 January. They have had two letters from General [Alexander] Gordon and the parcels for him are safe. |
