Description | Half-length portrait of William James Herschel, wearing a jacket, a high-collared shirt and tie, posed as if playing a concertina.
Inscribed verso, in pencil: 'A photograph I took of myself at Malda in 1854/5'. The image was found within the letter now at HSF/3/3/4, but this was matched with the final sheet of the letter now catalogued as HSF/3/3/6. Both refer to photographs of William and therefore the date that this image was sent to Collingwood remains unclear. The second of these letters refers to a concertina he wishes to have from England, implying that [by 6 March 1855] he did not yet have the instrument shown. |
