| Description | Meteorological observations [pp.1-168] made at Ballyneilmore, Artrea Parish, Derry, Ireland [now Northern Ireland]. Columns for month, day and times of observations (usually three observations per day), weather remarks, wind direction and strength, and rainfall. From 18 May 1722, there are barometer and thermometer readings. With occasional marginal notes, or footnotes.
The tables of data are followed by diary-style entries, and memoranda, from 1722 [pp.169-194]. These include a comment on Neve's instruments [p.169]: 'Note my Barometer was made by an Italian & calls himself Johannes Cassina but this Glass hath no Sistern...Note my Thermometer was made by the same John Cassina and is in the same frame with the Barometer...' There is also: 'Some observations of unusual Meteors [including the aurora borealis] Collected from my diarys &c' [pp.177-186]; 'A relation of some Inquiries made and observations about the Irish Fable of Whimsy; of stones growing on ye Tops of Rushes...' [pp.187-188]; 'An observation of Light appearing upon Horse's Ears in the Night' [p.189]; 'A Historical Account of (Elf Stones) and Elf Shooting which is a Distemper...' [pp.190-194].
With a title page, inscribed: 'Observations of the Weather for fourteen years viz from 1710 to 1725 as also some observations of the meteor called Aurora Borealis together with some other observations. By Thomas Neve...' |
