Description | Daily observations made aboard HMS Alligator, en route from England to Australia. Six observations per day, at 12.00 noon, 4.00pm, 8.00pm, 12.00pm, 4.00am and 8.00am. Columns for: day of the week, dates and hours of observations, barometer and thermometer readings (attached, air and water), depth of water thermometer, wind force and direction, ship's position by latitude and longitude, current force and direction, compass variation and general remarks.
The vessel is reported in the English Channel on 25 February [p.2], reaching Plymouth Sound on 4 March [p.4]. On 18 March Alligator arrives at Santa Cruz, Tenerife [p.7] and then off Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 19 April, before anchoring there until the final entry of 30 April 1838 [pp.14-16].
