Title | Letter from P Stephens, Admiralty Office, to Dr Thomas Birch |
Date | 31 January 1761 |
Description | Informing the Royal Society of a letter of the 29th January from Captain Grant of HMS 'Seahorse', on the refusal of Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon to proceed on the voyage to observe the Transit of Venus.
This refusal came as a result of Mason and Dixon on one hand and the Royal Society on the other, disagreeing as to where HMS 'Seahorse' should sail to. This followed the return of the 'Seahorse' to dock and Mason and Dixon's belief that they would not reach the original destination (Bencoolen [Bengkulu] in Sumatra [Indonesia]) in time to observe the Transit.
This letter from Stephens resulted in MM/10/132 being sent to Mason and Dixon. |
