Title | Letter from Christopher Henyk Diderich Buys Ballot, Utrecht to Edward Sabine |
Date | 5 November 1853 |
Description | Ballot thanks Sabine for the magnetical and meteorological observations from Toronto and Greenwich, and acknowledges the trouble Sabine faced in having to print the observations from Toronto twice. In return for these observations Ballot will attempt to deduct results from them.
Ballot read a paper regarding the rotation of the sun and of the synodical and sidereal periods of the moon to the Society of Sciences at Utrecht in June 1853, and intends to present this paper to the English. Ballot discusses his methodology to reach these results from the observations at Greenwich and Utrecht. The pretext to this paper was a historical review of [Karl] Kreil and Sir [Thomas Makdougall] Brisbane at Makerstoun. Reference to Mr [Lambert Adolphe Jacques] Quetelet of the Royal Academy of Science at Brussels and his study on ‘the departure of temperature from the average at different seasons of the year’, and Ballot’s own studies regarding the subject. Includes a table with the mean duration for positive and negative departures. |
