| Description | Notes that coloured sunsets and sunrises have at last reached England and Europe. The phenomonon has become less varied and intense in Mauritius, but they have had fine displays on 26-28 November and especially on 8 December: 'the prevailing colour is yellow - the red has disappeared, and so has the secondary glow'. He has been struck with F.A.R Russell's descriptions since they closely resemble Meldrum's own account. Russell is one of the few who have described secondary illumination. He notes Arago's explanation of this, citing the presence of volcanic dust in the atmosphere from Hecla. 'In the quantity of dust and vapours shot up by Krakatoa we have a vera causa'.
