Title | Letter from Sir Clements Markham, 21 Eccleston Square to [Alfred Bray] Kempe |
Creator | Markham; Sir; Clements Robert (1830-1916); President of the Royal Geographical Society |
Date | 10 June 1903 |
Description | Has received an urgent telegram from [William] Colbeck for credit, as he has been forced to borrow money for expenses. The Royal Geographical Society Council considered this 'to be discreditable to both Societies', but the [Antarctic] Committee believe they cannot give Colbeck any money until the Government answers. A Committee meeting will be called for Friday.
Sir George Mackenzie proposed getting an Agent, the New Zealand Shipping Company, so that Colbeck has someone to go to, rather than potentially getting himself and the Societies into trouble by borrowing. 'Really, the Committee must get us out of this difficulty'. Has written a statement intended to be signed by both Society Presidents, 'in answer to attacks from the Treasury and the "Daily Mail"', but thinks it might be 'undignified' to send it. |
