Title | Copy diary of John Frederick William Herschel, transcribed by Louisa Gordon |
Date | 1 January-24 December 1844 [1909-1910] |
Description | Family transcription of Sir John Herschel's original diary. The volume describes Herschel's scientific and social life, including brief special jury service in Maidstone from 12 March. During this period, Herschel works on a general catalogue of the stars in the Argus nebula - 'Such a job for heavy monotonous work I never undertook before or ever please God will again.' and most of the diary is taken up with meteorological and astronomical observations. It concludes with a list of Cape bulbs which had begun to flower by February, and comments on the weather in March. Occasional marginal drawings are copies of the originals.
With a note on the cover page '1844' and a pencilled list of key events in the year. |
