| Description | Kelvin has had a letter from the Vice-Chancellor inviting him to give the Rede Lecture. He felt it was impossible for him to undertake what would be expected of him, especially on the occasion of the Stokes Jubilee. Larmor's letter has shed more light on the matter and he thinks he could give a lecture on [George Gabriel] Stokes's work. He thinks this is the foundation of much of modern mathematical and experimental physics. Such an approach would be appropriate for the Rede Lecture that year. If Larmor could see the Vice-Chancellor, and if no other arrangement had been made, Kelvin would withdraw his declining statement. |
