TitleLetter from R S [Robert Simpson] Woodward, Hotel Majestic, Rome, to Sir Joseph Larmor, St John's College, Cambridge, England
CreatorWoodward; Robert Simpson (1849-1924); American civil engineer, physicist, and mathematician
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date25 June 1911
DescriptionLarmor's letter was received on their arival at Naples. The addresses at St. Andrews and Christiania will be sent care of the Royal Society, where he will call for them. Larmor's news of [George Ellery] Hale is a little dispelled by a letter Woodward received from him, in which he seemed improved. Woodward thinks Hale would best return to Pasadena. He was worried about financing for the 100-inch telescope, although now reassured on that score. The situation is relieved by the death of the original donor, Mr. Hooker, amd Woodward thinks they should not have accepted his gift and its obligations. Woodward's own health is improving and he describes his and Mrs Woodward's interests in Italy, and travels onward to Switzerland, but he will avoid Gremany. He describes Vito Volterra, whom he likes, along with Rome and the Romans.
