Title | Letter from C [Charles] Chree, 75 Church Road, Richmond, Surrey, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Chree; Charles (1860-1928); British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir; Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 11 June 1911 |
Description | Chree begins by defending the quality of the work undertaken by the scientific assistants at Kew, despite some not having had higher education. Then he explains the difficulty of the Superintendent role given the huge amounts of administrative duties required between the National Physical Laboratory and the Meteorological Office, giving him very little time to do research work. He discusses the staff and their merits and limitations, in particular [Thomas] Baker, of whom he speaks highly. However, Baker, who has worked at the Observatory for over 51 years, has struggled to keep up with the nature of the work, especially relating to the 'Geophysical Journal', and so Chree discusses the possible options regarding Baker's employment.
