TitleLetter from Geo Fras [George Francis] Fitzgerald, Trin Coll Dub [Trinity College, Dublin], to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorFitzGerald; George Francis (1851-1901); Irish theoretical physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date30 March 1895
DescriptionHe is glad to hear that dimensions of a body should change with motion through the aether, something that Fitzgerald has preached for years. He is not surpised that simple electron theory should give that result, describing the forces. He would have drawn attention to it himself, but had only a superficial understanding based upon [Oliver] Heaviside's work. He and Larmor discussed the inertia of electrons last summer, reasoning that it is not independent, but that it depends upon other electrons near and moving with it. Fitzgerald is sure that [Hendrik] Lorentz is good, but he has only glanced at his work, wishing that someone would translate the German. He wrote to Fitzgerald on changes in the size of bodies before publishing.
