Title | Letter from H F [Hugh Frank] Newall, Madingley Rise, Cambridge, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Newall; Hugh Frank (1857-1944) British astrophysicist and educational benefactor |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 4 March 1896 |
Description | Thanking Larmor for his thoughts, but Newall should have stated his problem explicitly: 'atmospheric disturbance causes the star image to jump off the slit of a spectroscope placed at the eye end of a refractor'. He discusses the linear movement of the image, proportional to the focal length, and the width of the slit. It becomes a question of whether increased light collection by the aperture is neutralised by increased amplitude of the star image across the slit. He gives equations for this and discusses the difficulty at length. |
