Title | Letter from H M [Hector Munro] Macdonald, 33 College Bounds, Old Aberdeen, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Macdonald; Hector Munro (1865-1935); British mathematician |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 19 April 1906 |
Description | He thanks Larmor for the [Guglielmo] Marconi paper; the waves he is working with are the ones Macdonald investigated. The length is as it ought to be, 'one fifth of the wave length the end next the spark gap being a point of zero electric force ...' and he discusses additional details at length. He thinks that the theory of such a system acting as a receiver would be difficult to work out. As he anticipated, [John Ambrose] Fleming's experiments are not an accurate reproduction, but Macdonald will say these things in the report, which Larmor will have soon. He sees that Larmor has accepted the invitation to the quatracentenary in September and he hopes that Larmor will stay with him. [Archibald] Geikie will be staying close by. He asks for the address of Edouard Sarasin's address in Geneva. Macdonald could write a short note on the field of force in Marconi's horizontal transmitter; the receiver should be treated as well, but he doubts he will be able to find time for the second. |
