Title | Letter from O W [Owen Willans] Richardson, Charing Cross Hotel, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Richardson; Sir Owen Willans (1879-1959); British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 24 July 1907 |
Description | He has been unable to find Larmor at Cambridge, wishing to ask him about Larmor's letter to 'Nature'. He thinks there is another difference between the steady solution for a sphere moving in a viscous fluid and the electron moving through aether. He describes this, concluding that there 'is something wrong with that method of distributing the motion in the aether'. He refers to his own treatment of the electron in aether in 'Nature' , with Larmor pointing out that a solution with similar limitations is admitted for motion through viscous fluids. Richardson notes that in addition to the difference he described in opening the letter, the solution for viscous fluid is an approximation, whereas correspondence in the case of the electron is supposed to be exact. He points out another difficulty, but supposes that Larmor knows more about it than he does. He hopes to see Larmor when Richardson returns to Cambridge. |
