Title | Letter from Arthur W [William] Rücker, Dabbs Hill, Harrow, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Rücker, Sir Arthur William (1848–1915), British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 4-5 July 1898 |
Description | He writes to remind Larmor that the Rumford Medal is given for work done within the last two years, and he should be sure that [George Francis] Fitzgerald has something to establish the claim. The whole of the work need not be within that time but they should be ready if any difficuties arise on this point.
In a next-day postscript, after receiving a letter from Larmor, Rücker states that he would place [William] Huggins' claim [for the Copley Medal] higher than Larmor does. He would look to [Robert] Ball to do this, but he gives an account of Huggins' achievements. He thinks that this might be the right year for Huggins. Next year will see [Edward] Frankland retire as Foreign Secretary and many think that [Joseph Norman] Lockyer should succeed him. It would be difficult to carry Huggins unless Lockyer supported him, which is improbable. He considers the options, thinking that if Huggins was rewarded now, no-one would oppose Rayleigh in 1899. Rücker considers Rayleigh's claims to be strongest. |
