Title | Letter from E [Ernest] Rutherford, 17 Wilmslow Road, Withington, Manchester, to [Robert Frederick William] Harrison |
Creator | Rutherford; Ernest; Baron Rutherford of Nelson (1871-1937); New Zealand physicist |
Recipient | Harrison; Robert Frederick William (1858-1945); British barrister and Assistant Secretary of the Royal Society |
Date | 11 January 1909 |
Description | Rutherford has received Harrison's letter asking if he might allow [Thomas Howell] Laby 5 milligrams of radium to take to New Zealand with him. Rutheford would like to help, but all his radium is in solution and tied up to a complicated instrument arrangement. It would be a week's work to remove it. It is not so difficult to buy radium as Harrison supposes, and £50 should cover it. It would be difficult for him to loan out material loaned to Rutherford by the Academy of Sciences. Rutherford would arrange it if the Royal Society would be prepared to pay. He will see Laby in Manchester on his way to Liverpool and New Zealand, and he will talk to him about it. |
