| Description | Slow tremors precede larger and slower earthquake motions, Perry considers, and this can happen over short or large distances. He gives values for the travelling speed of tremors and earthquakes. No-one has considered transmission being anything other than compressive or distortional waves, but instead of thinking as Rayleigh did that this is surface motion, Perry's idea is that motion extends from the surface to considerable depths and that the velocity would depend upon the frequency of a vibration. If [Augustus Edwrad Hough] Love would work the thing out, it would help seismologists. Perry had thought of going to Holland at whitsuntide, but will go to Surrey instead. His traction scheme is to have £1,000 spend on it. |
