Title | Letter from J H [John Henry] Poynting, 10 Ampton Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Poynting; John Henry (1852-1914); British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 10 January 1909 |
Description | He thanks Larmor for further consideration of his paper on rotary shafts and he was encouraged by Larmor withdrawing his objection to Poynting's optical application. He thinks that someone has been trying for the effect, but he cannot find the reference and he recalls that the experiment was 'quite bad & useless'. If there is longitudinal pressure on a rotating shaft it should lengthen torsional vibration and Poynting intends to look for this. He discusses the paper further, before concluding with an attempt to find convenient dates for a P & C [Physics and Chemistry] Committee. |
