Title | Letter from J H [John Henry] Poynting, 10 Ampton Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Poynting; John Henry (1852-1914); British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 4 September 1911 |
Description | Poynting wonders how to reply to the 'J de P' [Journal de Physique] man, whose deductions may be correct, although Poynting is confused by Relativity. His argument breaks down if you cease to take velocity as relative to the luminiferous medium. 'What puzzles me about the Relativists is the way in which they climb up a ladder, kick it away, and then remain suspended in mid air'. They start with aether at rest, then they virtually abolish it, he thinks. He gives an example of his own thinking on the application of Relativity to a particle in a train of longtudinal waves. |
