Description | He cannot say that the lines of sextets get any sharper as the field increases. The strength of field required to resolve a sextet is high. The lines are quite sharp when the sextet appears, Preston explaining why he thinks this is. Perturbations of this kind 'may, or must, originate in the impacts of molecules and appear in the subsequent settling down of the orbit during the free path in the magnetic field'. Some triplets consist of nine lines, perhaps due to an oscillation in the inclination of the plane of the orbit. The quartet form has ceased to exist, as Larmor will see in 'Nature', and Preston hopes to resolve the normal triplet. |
