| Title | Letter from Buys Ballot, Koninklijk Nederlandsch Meteorologisch Instituut, Utrecht, to Balfour Stewart |
| Creator | Ballot; Christoph Hendrik Diederik Buys (1817-1890); Dutch chemist and meteorologist |
| Recipient | Stewart; Balfour (1828-1887); British physicist and meteorologist |
| Date | 30 June 1884 |
| Description | He apologises for not replying to Balfour Stewart's letter, explaining his reasons; Dr. [Maurits] Snellen was not yet back from a conference, while Dr [Johannes Paulus] van der Stok was occupied with a scheme for calculating disturbances. Buys Ballot sent him Stewart's letter, giving van der Stok the opportunity to communicate. Buys Ballot describes the difficulty of determining the value of daily magnetic elements before calculating hourly periodicity, but he hopes it might be possible to have the hourly disturbances 'tolerably well'. The larger disturbances may follow a different law to the distributions that occur throughout the day. |
