Title | Letter from John Boyle, 5th Earl of Cork and 5th Earl of Orrery, Caledon, to Martin Folkes |
Creator | Boyle; John (1707 - 1762); 5th Earl of Cork, 5th Earl of Orrery and 2nd Baron Marston |
Recipient | Folkes; Martin (1690 - 1754); antiquary and natural philosopher |
Date | 6 April 1748 |
Description | The honour he has received from the Royal Society makes him ambitious of giving a mark of gratitude. He encloses a letter he has received from the Reverend Philip Skelton, giving an account of caterpillars that were numerous in the locality some years ago. He has pasted a piece of their web on the first leaf. Skelton is his neighbour and a man of sense and learning. If Folkes requires further particulars, Boyle would provide them. Land carriage to Dublin is very uncertain and therefore he is sending the package by post and asks that Folkes should notify him when it has arrived, by writing to Caledon, near Tynan, in Ireland.
An edited form of this letter was published as an introduction to: 'A letter from the Right Hon. John Earl of Orrery to Martin Folkes Esquire, Pr.R.S. inclosing an account of the Cornel-Catterpillar, contained in a letter from the Reverend Mr. Philip Skelton to his Lordship', Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, v.45, no.487, pp.281-296.
Endorsed verso: 'a Letter from the Right Honble. Charles Earl of Orrey to Martin Folkes Esq; Pr. R.S. enclosing an account of the Cornel-catterpillar contained in a letter from the Revd. Mr. Philip Skelton to his Lordship'. Endorsed: 'Apr.21.1748. pr. Tr.487. III.'; and 'no.4'
