Description | He has received Folkes's letter of 6 November and gives thanks for the present of books which Folkes intends to make. Gives family news, including the birth of a son, Raimond, two months ago. He hopes Folkes's family is well and that Folkes's wife, Lucretia, can be brought to a proper cure: he has some experience of disorders of the mind and recommends quiet and ease, and a breaking of all commerce with the patient. He approves of Folkes's design of coming abroad and hopes that he will come to Italy. His greatest pleasure is to pass two ot three hours alone in his study. He notes Dante's opinion of Florentines. He is grateful for Folkes's support in becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society, which will give him new motivation in publishing the surgical manuscripts. He hopes Dr. Mangey can help him recover 20 guineas. Reflections on the work involved in transcribing Philo’s Commentaries on the 8th 9th & 10th commandments. He begs Folkes to buy him a copy of the newest edition of John Ray's 'Synposis methodica stirpium Britannicarum' and any good new book on anatomy. He would also like a small book on Hebrew, which he takes pleasure in. He bought some fine Hebrew books in a Library sale and he intends this as a step towards learning Arabic. He asks that after his purchases, Folkes should send any remaining funds as a Bill of exchange upon Mr. Jackson or any other merchant.
