| Description | Gregory's recollections of the Royal College of Science (originally the Normal College of Science) and of working under the supervision of Charles Vernon Boys. Gregory describes events from October 1886, when Boys assigned laboratory tasks to him and to his fellow student Gibson. Their researches were largely on the mechanical properties of fine wires and fibres. In character, 'Boys was the perfect example of the type of independent research worker through whose observations and experiments the chief advances have been achieved in the realm of the physical sciences.'
The notes were produced for the use of Robert John Strutt, 4th Baron Rayleigh, to aid in the compiling of his Royal Society Obituary Notice of C V Boys. The typescript has various manuscript corrections by Gregory. |
