Title | Letter from Heinrich Christian Schumacher, Altona, to Captain Henry Kater, Member of the Board of Longitude, York Gate, Regent's Park, London |
Creator | Schumacher: Heinrich Christian (1780-1850); German astronomer |
Recipient | Kater; Henry (1777-1835); British geodicist and metrologist |
Date | 6 November 1827 |
Description | He thanks Kater for the trouble he has taken in comparing Schumacher's troy pound with the standard weight, and for the balance he has ordered from Robinson. The balance is a fine one, but not quite adjusted. He gives Kater an order for troy weights, and asks if he could compare them to the standard. They should be 'nicely polished'. He has written to Robinson to order a small balance, and having seen Mr. Kessel's, also by Robinson, he suggests alterations which might be made, incorporating a small illustrative sketch. He has already expressed his regret that Kater was unhappy when Schumacher published part of one of his letters, but he discusses his reasoning further. |
