Title | Letter from William Henry Smyth, Crescent, Bedford, to 'My dear Sir' [Henry Kater] |
Creator | Smyth; William Henry (1788-1865); British naval officer and surveyor |
Recipient | Kater; Henry (1777-1835); British geodicist and metrologist |
Date | 23 July 1828 |
Description | He returns thanks for the two papers. He has kept the ones for Dr. Pearson, whom he expects and given one to Mr. [Thomas] Maclear. Robinson has applied the microscope and files the transit but Smyth has been unable to get a circumpolar star owing to a deluge of rain. Mrs. Smyth is delighted at the prospect of seeing Kater and his wife. The collimaters are in status quo as the sky has not been clear, but he has sent a good account of them to continental friends. He expects his mother and sister next week, but will see Kater after that. In a postscript, he thanks Mrs. [Mary Frances] Kater for a beautiful star table, which he will keep in a cabinet. He asks if Kater has noticed the blotches on Mars. |
