Embarked on medical studies in Paris and at the Middlesex Hospital, London; appointed physician to the Dreadnought seamen's hospital ship, Greenwich, where whilst working with George Busk he undertook extensive research on cholera and scurvy, and acquired considerable knowledge on diseases of the stomach and liver (1837); Professor of medicine at King's College, London (1840-1863); censor at the Royal College of Physicians (1845-1847); retired from King's College, London (1863); gave up his large practice in London owing to ill health (1867); retired to Barnstaple, Devon (1869).
