Unilever (1939), worked with Frank Whittle on jet engines during WW2 (1940-1946); recruited by Ruston and Hornsby, Lincoln to work on industrial gas turbines (1946-1949), Chief Engineer, Turbine Department (1949-1954), Engineering Director (1954-1959); managing director, Hawker Siddeley Brush Turbines (1959-1961); group technical director, Davy-Ashmore (1961-1968); Chairman, Committee on Engineering Design producing Feilden report on engineering design commissioned by Lord Hailsham, Minister for Science (1963); Deputy Director General (1968-1970), Director General (1970-1981), British Standards Institution; president, European Committee on Standardisation; continued to work after retirement in 1982 through Feilden Associates; founder fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering; honorary doctorates from University of Loughborough; Queen's University, Belfast; University of Lincoln; freedom of the City of Lincoln (2003)
