Served in Second World War. After, resumed his studies at the Ecole Superieur d'Electicite and subsequently obtained his Ph. D from Univsersity of Oxford (1950) under supervision of Maurice Pryce FRS. Professor at the College de France (1960-1985)

Foreign Honorary Member of teh American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1974)
