Researcher with Professor Arthur Lapworth; studied for doctorate with Robert Robinson; assistant lecturer at Manchester University (1924); demonstrator in Dyson Perrins Laboratory, Oxford (1927); lecturer at Oxford University; fellow and praelector in chemistry at Queen's College, Oxford; published 'The Chemistry of Nitrogen' with T W J Taylor; part of the team that worked on the isolation and chemistry of penicillin in Oxford; as representative of the Oxford Preparative Meeting of the Society of Friends was a founder member of the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief which later developed into Oxfam (1942); Alfred Capper Pass Chair of organic chemistry at Bristol University (1944) where he gave the first ever public lecture on the chemistry of penicillin (1945); Tilden Lecture (1945) on "Non-benzenoid Aromatic Hydrocarbons"; Pedler Lecture (1965) on "The Eidening Outlook in Aromatic Chemistry"; Head of the School of Chemistry, University of Bristol (1954); retired (1965)
