With his wife published a paper describing the synthesis of elements in the cores of stars, known as B2FH theory after the names of those worked on it - the Burbidges, American physicist William Fowler and British astronomer Sir Fred Hoyle.
Influence on origin and nature of the universe - rected big-bang theory. Pioneer of radio astronomy, studying galaxies that emit large amounts of energy in the radio spectrum. Director of Kitt Peak National Observatory in Tucson (1978-1984).
Founding member of the University of California San Diego's department of Physics, Professor of Physics (1962-2002);
President of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (1974-1976); Jansky Prize of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (1985)
