Title | Referee's report by William Grylls Adams, on a paper 'A determination of the value of the earth's magnetic field in international units' by William Watson |
Date | 18 July 1901 |
Description | Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
Recommends greater clearness in the introduction, which should be shortened and embody the clear statement printed in the abstract as to the method employed. Part of sheet five, sheets six, seven, eight, and part of sheet nine, should be omitted and he provides a paragraph of text which should be inserted instead concerning the calculation of the constant of the coil, 'F'. Thinks the mode of experimenting is not new. The author gives a full and careful description of the apparatus employed as well as full details of the measurements made, and the close agreement of the results indicated. He discusses how the author structures the paper and notes that the paper might probably be improved by shortening the long discussion of the results, and especially the discussion of the question as to the weight to be given to the various determinations of the electro-chemical equivalent of silver. As the abstract of the paper already printed does not give a sufficient description of the careful series of experiments made, nor of the results obtained, he recommends that with the modifications suggested, the paper with its illustrations be printed in the Proceedings.
