TitleLetter from [Meghnad] N Saha to [Frank Edward] Smith, regarding a paper 'Studies on the ionosphere at Allahabad' by B D Pant and R R Bajpai
Date12 July 1938
DescriptionPaper reference code: A.93

Argues the referee's comment about the significant aspects of the paper having already been published elsewhere [see RR/W/6/42] is a 'gratuitous conclusion'. Explains the nine references to the Indian papers in detail.

Three, by Saha and [R N] Rai (1937), Rai (1937) and Bajpai (1937) are 'entirely theoretical'. The fourth, Pant and Bajpai (1937), 'is only a letter published in Science and Culture, a popular scientific monthly'. Compares this with a study by [Edward Victor] Appleton which was published in Nature, Vol 136, p. 52 (1935), and then Proceedings [of the Royal Society], Vol 150, p. 685 (1935). The fifth, [G R] Toshniwal (1935) is also a letter, published in Nature. The next three, Bajpai (1936), Toshniwal and Pant (1935) and Toshniwal, Pant, Bajpai and Verma (1936) contain measurements at a specific frequency. The final, Toshniwal, Pant and Bajpai (1937) contains 'preliminary discussion', but Saha argues this paper is 'more exhaustive and fuller'.

Suggests the referee 'does not believe in' the subject of the paper. Refers to a paper by Rai, as well as [Satyendra Nath] Bose's paper in the Indian Journal of Physics (Vol. 12, p. 121), to demonstrate its legitimacy.

Argues that the referee's comments are 'groundless'. Looks forward to the publication of the paper.

[Not published in RS journals but published in Proc.Nat.Inst.Sci.Ind., 5, No.2, 1939].
