Title | Letter from H G [Henry George] Lyons, 3 York Terrace. Regent's Park, to [Robert] Robertson |
Creator | Lyons; Sir Henry George (1864-1944); British geologist and museum director |
Recipient | Robertson; Sir Robert (1869-1949); British chemist |
Date | 27 June 1939 |
Description | He cannot recall the context of his letter quoted in the memorandum on the Royal Society Club, but he thinks the number of Fellows of the Royal Society in the early years may be of more use. He notes the attendance records at meetings from Robert Hooke's diary, and with low numbers a dining club meeting with any regularity would not have been practicable. Tavern dinners would have been an accepted custom from time to time and when Fellowship numbers were up to 300, any difficulty would have been overcome. |
