TitleLetter to Thomas Gold re Nehru's reference
Date1950
Description'Thinking over our conversation, I feel convinced that a 'peace ' reference would be as harmful as a 'left-wing' one. Men of ill-will - and there are plenty about - would be quick to connect the references with the Russian peace moves, and scare away possible supporters.

Whats wanted I think is (i) Nehru the farsighted statesman (ii) N. a world figure (iii) while necessarily a politician in his own country, he would here be above politics and therefore well able to represent the interests of the university to the government of the day, whatever that government may be.

The pacifists would support him anyway - Tedder looks after this.

I ahall await you tomorrw about 6.0 I am sorry not to be more active, but have been laid up most of the year.'
