TitleLetter from [Randall Thomas] Davidson, Lambeth Palace, S.E., to Alan [Archibald Campbell Swinton]
CreatorDavidson; Randall Thomas (1848-1930); Archbishop of Canterbury (1903-1928)
Date7 February 1917
DescriptionInforms he has read Mr Fraser's letter with interest. Thinks Fraser is mistaken about General Belfield, at all events as regards the General's present attitude. Has been in touch with the authorities on this complex and difficult matter-complex and difficult because 'we are not acting independently but in conjunction with Allies and there are wheels within wheels'. Not prepared to defend the action or inaction of all Departmetns but they have larger difficulties to contend with than can easily be made public. Believes there may be further opportunity for questions once Parliament meets, judging it better to act privately rather than publicly. Informs he will have the opportunity to speak to Lord Newton which where Mr Fraser's letter may be useful.
Handwritten postscript informs that since dictating the content of the letter, he has spoken to the Prime Minister on the matter, stating it is clear he did not exaggerate the difficulties.
