Title | Letter from [Archibald Campbell Swinton], Thestone, to Alan [Archibald Campbell Swinton] |
Creator | Swinton; Archibald Campbell (1812–1890); advocate, jurist, and father of Alan Archibald Campbell Swinton |
Date | 28 January c. 1883 |
Description | Expresses concern about Swinton's poor attendance at his apprenticeship at Elswick, as reflected in montly time tables he receives. Despite overall positive feedback from Mr [Percy Graham Buchanan] Westmacott about Swinton's abilities and likability at Elswick, Westmacott admits that punctuality is lacking. Attributes this partly to Swinton's involevement in electrical experiments and possible reluctance to get up early on cold mornings. Urges Swinton to prioritise punctuality and attendance, stressing that his future success depends on it. Suspects distractions such as late-night investigations and theatre visits may be affecting his performance, requesting that he corrects his behaviour.
The letter is dated as 28 January but is missing the year. The estimated year is based on the timeline of when Swinton worked at Elswick, 1883 being the most probable. |
