| Description | Delighted that Swinton will be visiting them on Sunday, informing that she and Swinton's father have been reading the notice of his sparks exhibition in Edinburgh. Describes the lovely weather in Scotland, commeting that Alice [Susan Lucy Campbell-Swinton] and Kate [Catherine Margaret Campbell-Swinton], Swinton's sister and half-sister, have taken to hill climbing. Mentions a battle contest, with soldiers having been at it 2 in the morning. Informs she has heard from Mrs Devs that George has bought the other share in the house at Duns which belonged to him & Sir Norman Pringle, so he will have a vote [illeg.]. Adds that 'Balfour made a telling speech on Tuesday in [illeg] to Mr Gladstone-what a self satisfied old serpent the last named is.' Hopes Swinton will be able to spend two nights there and see a battle. The postscript informs of Mr Fletcher has become very ill from an abscess and has to leave Eastbourne for 6 months and go abroad for the winter. |
