Creator | Armstrong; William George (1810 - 1900); Baron Armstrong of Cragside; armaments manufacturer and industrialist |
Date | 20 October 1892 |
Description | Informs he has got his two 10 inch spark coils on very vigorous operation: 'two will charge a Leyden battery of four half gallon jars with the balls of a Lanes[?] discharger half inch apart 100 times a minute and with a legs[?] distance, four beyond the power of counting'. Reports having tried the resin oil apparatus with 'this battery and only a quarter of an inch discharging pass & get a mixture of bursts and sparks discharge through a space of 13 ms but the first thing that happened was that the glass tubes enveloping the upright wires supporting the discharging rods were smashed by the current breaking through'. He has substituted such glass tubes, detailing his methods. Informs he must have a much stronger tube and shall be obliged if Swinton will procure two for him, specifying the required dimensions. |
