Title | Letter from [Alan Archibald Campbell] Swinton, to The Editor, The Times |
Creator | Swinton; Alan Archibald Campbell (1863-1930); British electrical engineer |
Date | 31 May 1921 |
Description | Commenting on a letter that appeared in The Times column by Sir William Barrett complaining that references to Mr Appleyar'd experiments of 1894-1905 do not go far enough back, quoting a Royal Dublin Society paper he read in 1880. Points out that Sir William Barrett does not go far enough back, as in July 1878 letters patent were granted to Mr Elisha Gray, of Chicago, describing apparatus for telegraphically transmitting composite sounds or musical tones, and for reproducing these at the receiving end of the line by means of semi-conducting animal tissue in gliding contact with a metal plate. Cites other examples to illuistrate his point. |
