TitleLetter from [Alan Archibald Campbell] Swinton, to Arthur H. Kerr [Esquire], Lyndhurst, Malton, Yorkshire
CreatorSwinton; Alan Archibald Campbell (1863-1930); British electrical engineer
Date20 March 1928
DescriptionIn response to a previous letter, informs that the amount of coal used by modern generating stations per 24 hours varies enormously in various districts, according to the nature of the load, also the quality of the coal used has great effect. Agrees with Kerr's ideas that the figure is usually in practice generally over 2lbs per kilowatt hour, and that the figures of 1lbs, and even less are only obtained on tests. Adds that the number of hours per day or per annum that they ought to take as basis will depend on the nature of the load, whether power for mile, coal pits, factories, or for lighting, and that it is very difficult to give a safe figure without knowing of the circumstances. Fears that unless their figures are calculated upon actual knowledge of what is likely to be suitable for the particular station and the district supplied, they may be turned inside out by experts on the other side.
