Title | Letter from [Alan Archibald Campbell Swinton], 66 Victoria Street, London, S. W., to Miss Kate Swinton, Glenardoch, Donne |
Creator | Swinton; Alan Archibald Campbell (1863-1930); British electrical engineer |
Date | 19 December 1914 |
Description | Informs that Ex-Alderman John Hall, Secretary for the last 20 years, of Swinton's Scarborough Electric Supply Company, was killed by a shell bursting in his bedroom while he was dressing during the bombardment of Scarborough. In addition, Swinton's Chief-Cahier suffered a head wound by a bit of shrapnel. Explains that destruction of his works and wireless station were the objective of the bombardment, reporting that they luckily sustained little damage, though the battery room of the works had all of its windows broken by a shell which wounded a sentry in its vicinity. Eight shells passed within close proximity to their chimney. Describes the damage done to Mr George Lord Beeforth's house on the Esplanade and notifies he has received communication from Mr Aldernon-Smith, who is deaf, and thought the bombardment was the banging of a dooor. Understands that George Sitwell took refuge in the cellar on a heap of coal but the coal gave way and he fell heavily to the ground. Notifies that Osbert has gone to the front and will be in the same place as young Alan. |
