Title | Letter from [John Walter] Gregory, Geology Department, The University, Glasgow, to [Alan Archibald] Campbell Swinton [Esquire], 66 Victoria Street, London, S. W. 1. |
Creator | Gregory; John Walter (1864 - 1932) |
Date | 13 December 1927 |
Description | Refers to [William Fletcher] Barrett and Bestermann’s book “The Divining Rod,” published by Methuen, mentioning an initial reluctance to lend his copy due to the possibility of receiving a reply from Lady [Florence Elizabeth] Barrett. He would be happy to lend it, if there is no reply within a week. Criticises the book for not being entirely balanced, claiming it suppresses literature opposing divining and omits proper references to the Guildford experiments. Thanks Swinton for his note on Mager and comments on the author’s series of books, speculating that Mager may not be of sound mind based on photographs and personal impressions. Appreciates Swinton’s expert opinion, not being a physicist himself. Discusses Lord Farrer, who is about to leave for India but is considering writing to the National Physical Laboratory about his experiments, conducted around 1900, on the idea that running water emits some sort of electric or physical wave that sensitive individuals can detect. Plans to follow up on this topic with [Richard Tetley] Glazebrook when he next meets him. Explains, in the postscript, that he delayed sending the letter, having written to both Glazebrook and Lord Farrer in hopes that Farrer could contact the National Physical Laboratory before his departure. |
